What's the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated?

Gold-filled jewelry is processed by placing layers of real gold over a base metal (usually brass or copper). It is then pressure bonded using extreme heat. Since the layer of gold is real and layered thickly over the metal, gold-filled jewelry is way more durable than gold-plated. You can bathe and shower in gold-filled jewelry without fear of it tarnishing. And as long as the gold-filled piece is well taken care of, it can last many, many years. Gold-filled jewelry usually has a higher price-tag than gold-plated jewelry because of its quality, but it's certainly more affordable than solid gold pieces.

Gold-plated jewelry is processed by electroplating a very thin layer of gold to bond onto a base metal (brass or copper). It is not as durable as gold-filled jewelry nor as high quality but very affordable. You can prolong the longevity of your gold-plated piece by avoiding water, oils, perfumes and sweat.
How do I care for my jewelry?

Gold-filled jewelry can be washed gently with mild soap and water. Pat dry after washing. Please keep jewelry in your Heart-Struck jewelry bag/box and store in a cool, dry place avoiding sudden temperature changes.

Gold plated jewelry should only be cleaned if absolutely necessary. Use a cotton ball and gently buff or wipe gold-plated jewelry. Avoid water, harsh chemicals and buffing excessively.

DO NOT:
Sleep with jewelry on
Swim in chemically treated water (pools, hot tubs)
Work out or sweat profusely (sauna)
Spray perfume, oils or sunscreen directly on pieces

Is your jewelry really hand-made?
​
Certain components of our jewelry are mass-produced by a reputable manufacturer (chains, jump rings, stones, etc.). They are then hand-assembled into the beautiful and unique jewelry that you see on the site.
Therefore, since the majority of our jewelry is made to order, please be advised that it may take up to 7-15 days to receive your pieces.
When can I expect my order to arrive?
Due to the nature of our pieces (hand-made, hand-crafted and hand-assembled), the majority of our jewelry is made to order. Please be advised that it may take 7-15 days to receive your pieces, although we will try our best to have you receive your order in a 3-5 day turnaround time.
Please be aware that shipping times are mere "estimates" and pieces are not guaranteed to arrive on the exact date given.
